The adtac DisInventory
Our hub of knowledge on tactics and techniques used by malign disinformation operatives, known countermeasures, and global disinformation incidents. We also highlight policy best-practice from around the world with our library of national and supranational legislation relevant to disinformation, as well as the ‘terms of service’ put in place by social media platforms themselves. The DisInventory is crowdsourced and constantly updated - got something to share? Then join our community and let us know
This entails creating multiple groups online that have limited links between them so that if one is exposed there is less risk the rest of the network will be taken down
Creating a fake news site that can later be cited by mainstream news as legitimate. Websites often appear to be foreign outlets whose content is laundered into domestic media.
When foreign campaigns hire agents in the local target market so that they appear to be local. Locals have better language skills and know the culture better so they can more effectively influence people. Likewise, local agents are less likely to be flagged as suspicious, thereby decreasing the chances of detection.
Black Box sessions bring together a multidisciplinary group of experts to examine the critical elements of the latest disinformation case studies. Each week a researcher presents their findings on a CIB campaign to the group. We then use the diverse expertise of our network to identify the different phases of the operation, map and debate the specific malign techniques used, and consider the effectiveness of any interventions. Black Boxing provides oversight on trends in malign actor behaviour and direction on countermeasure development, including pinpointing the most effective moment of intervention.

Adtac is an international counter-disinformation innovation lab based in the Netherlands. We believe disinformation isn’t really about narratives, but rather the tactics, techniques, and behaviour used to spread them. As such, we seek to identify the individual techniques used by malign actors, research potential future methodologies, and develop solutions to counter them. We form a part of DROG https://drog.group/, an innovation platform that offers public-private solutions to counter online harms like disinformation.
